At First I Didn’t See It But Then One Day I Did:
A detail of a painting by Baltimore artist Gina Falcone Skelton represents humanity’s passage through the world. Our collective history is one long attempt to understand the environment and our place in it, to leave our mark. Individually, we labor to distill our own voices from the vast universal throb and, if we are brave, to join that voice to God’s.
We are born into the natural world; it informs us, if we pay attention, to hidden truths. As sentient beings, we have our choices: participate sparingly in the streams of life teeming around us; destroy it as we cut a self-centered swath; or, turn towards life and attach ourselves to its pulse. In all cases, we are subject to the human conditions of limited control, of separation – from our origins, each other, and ourselves – and, especially, of change and loss. Battling natures that compel us to rattle the gates, we seek escape from death – the ultimate change – and from all the little deaths we suffer along the way.
